Sunday’s Deal of the Day at The Paperie is…

ALL Ink Pads: Buy 1 Get 1 HALF PRICE!*

Stock up on VersaColor Cubes, Brilliance Dew Drops, Colorbox Cats Eyes, or get yourself a nice set of standard size VersaFine ink pads in Onyx Black and Vintage Sepia – these two should be staples in everyone’s arsenel!

I personally LOVE the smaller sized ink pads – you can get such a huge selection of colours at a fraction of the price of the standard sized pads – of course I have multiple staples (Black, Brown, White, VersaMark) in all of the larger pads and recently added Sky Blue to my drawer because I found myself using it A LOT.

At my Instructor training in Seattle we discussed Ink Pads and the pros and cons of each type of ink. You will likely end up with a variety of black inks if you are really into stamping because each one seems to have a different function. They have not yet come up with an All Purpose Black Ink.  Here’s a breakdown of some of my favourite black inks that I often reach for (yes, I like them ALL and I’ll tell you why!)

Memento Tuxedo Black - AWESOME fast drying (fast as in immediate) dye ink, ideal for rubber stamps and colouring with Copics or Watercolor Markers. I typically like to colour my images immediately after stamping, so this is my go-to black ink for most of my stamping. The ink pools up a little bit on acrylic stamps so you don’t get a very crisp image – this doesn’t bother me personally, but I know it is an issue for others. The pad dries out a bit quicker than most inks I’ve used, but that is because the ink is so fast-drying – it’s a good idea to pick up a re-inker when you purchase this ink just in case.

Archival Jet Black - Another nice dye ink that produces a crisp image when used with acrylic and rubber stamps. It’s not as fast-drying as Memento but a quick blast of heat from your embossing tool will dry the ink much quicker so that you can colour your image.

VersaColor Black – The most appealing thing about this pigment ink is that it can be embossed for up to 10 minutes after you’ve stamped the image. Most pigment inks can be embossed, but this is my favourite by far. Whenever I want to use my watercolor paints I use this ink with clear embossing powder. There will be no bleeding and as an added bonus the raised lines capture the paint so that you don’t have to worry about your colours running together. It takes awhile to dry so if you don’t heat set this ink when using it without embossing it will smudge. I have it in most of the colours and love it.

VersaFine Onyx Black – Amazing ink for fine detail images – but contrary to its claim it is NOT fast-drying (as my finger-smudged images from last night will prove). Be very careful not to touch your image for up to 15 minutes after you’ve stamped it. I primarily use this ink for my sentiments and verses as those are typically the very last things I stamp on my card, then I can just set it aside to dry. You can also emboss VersaFine with clear embossing powder if you act quickly – I don’t even bother with black embossing powder anymore. I’ve had my VersaFine Onyx Black for almost 6 years and it is still just as juicy as the day I bought it.

StazOn Jet Black – I use this on acetate or other non-porous surfaces only. I never use my StazOn with Acrylic stamps because it’s so hard to clean off – and here’s a tidbit I JUST read: StazOn Cleaner should NOT be used on acrylic stamps, in can eventually cause the polymer to erode or “melt”. Good to know!

Here’s a good tip I picked up today – if you’re bothered by ink staining your acrylic stamps, ink the stamp up first with VersaMark and then your desired colour – I’ll be trying this trick with my ColorBox inks tonight as I find they are the worst for stamp staining. Perhaps it’s time I got over it though – as I learned yesterday, acrylic stamps sure are a lot harder to find on the floor/desk if they’re not stained!

ACCUCUT SHOWCASE

Today for our AccuCut Showcase we have ANOTHER card made with those handy-dandy felt shapes featured in our last two Blog posts. As you can probably tell, I am having lots of fun with my Christmas themed Scrapbooking embellishments. I find myself looking at all of the embellishments I’ve “hoarded” over the last few years in a whole new light! Use it or lose it, that’s my new philosophy!

For this card I used the AccuCut Antique Accent Frames Die-cut and the Little Yellow Bicycle Felt Shapes. I punched a 1.75″ Circle out of white cardstock and adhered the felt ornament over the circle before attaching it to the Antique Accent die-cut. I stamped a circular design in the center of the ornament using Bamboo and Mountain Lake VersaColor Ink and then glittered it up with my Sakura Stardust pen. A scrap of A Muse ribbon and the sentiment from Hero Arts finished off this card.

Of course I gave my little snowman a light coating of Stardust Stickles (my FAVOURITE Stickles) and added a few A Muse black gemstones for buttons. We just sold out last pack of felt shapes today, but I bet you have TONS of Christmas embellishments in your Scrapbooking or Stamping stash that you can use to make quick cards or tags. To make this card I first stamped the Cardinal Silhouette on the front of 8 kraft cards with Brown Memories Dye ink and then stamped 8 cardinals on ivory linen paper with Ruby Colorbox pigment ink. After letting both cardinals dry I cut out the red cardinal and used dimensional foam tape to pop it up over the brown cardinal on the card. A few dots over the berries with my White Uni-ball pen, some faux stitching with a brown Zig Writer, and the sentiment in matching brown ink finished off this card.
