SATURDAY, AUGUST 17th (10am-5pm)
Encaustic Tag Book & Grafitti of My Life ($145)

Come and play with stamping and beeswax! Before lunch we’ll make six Encaustic Tags (acrylic paint, spray ink, modeling paste, beeswax… oh my!). These tags will go in an accordion book structure. Beeswax is fun and addictive… come and play! We’ll break for lunch and then work on the next project: Grafitti of My Life! You’ll make a small themed journal based on Dina’s popular “Graffiti of My Life” class. Your personal graffiti is the words, quotes, song lyrics, etc. that are meaningful to you. We’ll be making free-flowing backgrounds, tipped-in inclusions, and confined collages to decorate our journals. Learn techniques and ideas you can incorporate into your scrapbooking, card making or journaling!

Supplies You Need:

  • Basic crafting tool kit (pencil, scissors, Ranger craft sheet, paint rag, paint brushes, palette knife, paint palette, water container to clean your brushes in, baby wipes)
  • White acrylic gesso
  • Gel medium (a must for both classes… essential to one of the collage techniques)
  • Palette knife (plastic is fine)
  • Acrylic paint in your favorite colors (ie: Claudine Hellmuth Studio Paint).
  • 4 sheets of printed paper such as pages from an old book, sheet music, newspaper…anything printed.
  • A small collection of collage papers & fabrics that appeal to you. Dina will bring her standard box of papers, but your journal will be more personal if you use papers & fabrics that you like.
  • Pens that will write over dried paint for journaling in the album (ie: Faber Castell Pitt Pen – en route to The Paperie)
  • Quotes, song lyrics, sage words of advice….any text that is meaningful to you in your life. You can just bring a list so you can hand-write it in your journal, or you can type it & print it and use the print-out in your journal.
  • Optional: Any of your favorite stamps. Dina will bring a large assortment for class use, but bring any that you like as well (label with your name).
  • Optional: Permanent Ink pads. Dina likes Ranger Archival pads because they’re permanent and stamp well on paint and ink. She will have some to share, but it might be nice for you to have your own.  The Paperie stocks a nice selection.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 18th, 2013 (10am-5pm)
An Introduction to Art Journaling: ($125)

Have you been curious about art journaling, but are not sure where to start? Come and play with Dina for a whole day! We’ll explore what art journaling is and Dina will teach you techniques for creating fun and expressive pages. She’ll also give you some tips for page topics and writing on your pages. No previous art experience is required.  Dina will show you how she gets images onto her pages. This workshop will cover: painted backgrounds, gesso texture, masking and stenciling, layering, top texture, collage, drawing with the magic pencil, and journaling (what to write!). At the end of the day, we’ll bind our journal pages into a book to take home to help inspire all other creative endeavours!

Supplies You Need:

  • Basic crafting tool kit (pencil, scissors, Ranger craft sheet, paint rag, paint brushes, palette knife, paint palette, water container to clean your brushes in, baby wipes)
  • White acrylic gesso
  • Acrylic paints in an assortment of colors (Dina prefers artist-quality paint, but bring what you’ve got).
  • Paintbrushes—one or two should be fine… Dina recommends a large flat brush, about ¾”. Foam brushes will get you by but are not ideal.  She likes the Claudine Hellmuth brush assortment by Ranger – they are inexpensive and good quality.
  • Pen for writing (such as an ultra-fine or extra-fine point Sharpie, Faber-Castell Pitt pen, or Sharpie Water-based Poster-paint marker in Extra-fine point)
  • Gel medium. Dina uses gel medium as my adhesive (matte gel).
  • Black ink pad (Dina recommends Ranger’s Archival black pad, and will have some for class use, too)
  • Any rubber stamps that appeal to you. I will have many for class use.
  • Optional: a journal to work in. We will be working in class on watercolor paper, but if you’d also like to work in a journal, feel free. Choose a journal with heavy pages—preferably watercolor paper.
  • Optional: any papers or scraps or pictures that inspire you. I’ll be giving you an assortment of ephemera, but if you have something you love, feel free to bring it.

We will be ordering all of Dina’s recommended class supplies in advance, please let us know if there is something on the list you would like us to order/reserve for you.

Please note that the pictures above are representative of the type of art you will create in class. Dina teaches techniques and processes, so students will likely not end up with art that looks exactly like the photos.
