We’re excited to share The Scope’s new #PhotoChallengeNL this August and some of us are even participating! We’d love if you played along, think of it as a sort of photo scavenger hunt. The Scope is a local arts & entertainment magazine in St. John’s and we’re happy to see a challenge arise that has such significance to us, as memory keepers and artists.
Wanna give it a whirl? Here’s what The Scope wrote:
Sure! What do I have to do?
Snap a picture or video using Instagram or Vine based on the daily suggestions above, add the tag #PhotoChallengeNL and show off your skills to other Scope readers through Tumblr, Instagram, or Twitter.
How do I sign up?
To be included in The Scope’s daily email reminder list, fire a quick message to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Why are you doing this?
Because simple creative challenges can have a huge impact. We’ve watched over the years as the RPM Challenge has encouraged some amazing growth in the Newfoundland and Labrador music scene, and it all grew out of a few simple ideas: set a goal, give a deadline. The photo challenge is based on that idea.
Is there a prize for completing the PhotoChallengeNL?
No, just like the RPM Challenge, there is no prize and there is no winner. This is a creative challenge! Why do it? Why not! You got this.
Do you have to follow the suggestion for every day?
Sure. It’s more fun that way. We tried to make them flexible enough so you can have fun with them.
What if I miss a day or two?
Come on! You can do it! It doesn’t have to be THE photo or video, it just has to be A photo or video. Not every day has to be an amazing work of art.
Will my photos be printed in The Scope?
We’ll include a live feed on our website, but we won’t ever print a photo in The Scope unless you give us express permission to do that. We might ask to print a selection of photos in the September issue, but we’re not sure what is happening at this point.
What will be done with these photos once we’ve put them online?
We’ll see what happens, but we’ve been tossing around ideas based around the RPM Challenge listening party. Maybe a slideshow exhibit where we choose one photo from each successful participant? We’ll see.

SOUNDS FUN! I love photo challenges, the prompts always cause me to pause and think about what I’d like to capture. I spend more time looking around at my surroundings and searching for beauty and anything unusual or extraordinary. Scrapbookers are accustomed to taking photos daily, these prompts just give you a chance to explore your creativity.
If you’ve ever participated in Project Life, or any Ali Edwards projects like Week in the Life, Day in the Life, December Daily – you’re primed and ready for this challenge! Think about the awesome DIY album you can make after with your August #PhotoChallengeNL afterwards! Here’s a perfect example of a mini album from Sara:
The prompt on August 4th was “Inspired by a Song” so I snapped this picture downtown while the song “These boots were made for walking” played in my head…
We hope you’ll play along on Instagram or Twitter, or even on your Blogs – be sure to tag the photos #PhotoChallengeNL AND #ThePaperieNL so we can find your photos.
